Directions.

  1. Quickly check whether the statement fulfills the criteria of being a Program Goal or a Learner Outcome. If the statement does not fulfill the criteria of being a program goal or learner outcome, check Not an Outcome or Goal. Go through the whole list.

  2. Go back to the statements you marked as Program Goals and decide whether they could be stated in terms of learner outcomes. Next, go back to the statements you marked as Not an Outcome or Goal and decide if they can be rewritten as an outcome or goal. Write the rewritten statements below each original statement.

Definition of Learner Outcomes and Program Goals

Learner Outcomes are focused on what a student should be able to do at the end of a course or program.

Program Goals are focused on what the program wants to be able to do in order to support student learning or college operations.

Program Goals and Learner Outcomes should be:

  1. Observable/Measurable Outcomes or goals describe behavior, skills or results that can be observed and assessed.
  2. Amenable to Assessment: Outcomes or goals do not create overly burdensome assessment situations. Beware, for example, of outcomes with conjunctions as they are often multiple outcomes hooked together and might require different assessments for each outcome.
