Where to start if you are a new student looking for a university chess team

  • Search your university web page to see if your college already has an established club.
  • If you can't locate a club by doing a search, find your Registered Student Office (RSO) or club activities office and make an official inquiry to find the chess club. Almost every university has an office to help you locate existing clubs; the RSO office is usually located on your university web page under student life.

If your university does not have an active club

  • Ask your RSO office to help you start a new chess club. Make sure to ask them if a club existed in the past. You may be able to use the prior club resources to establish a new club.
  • Find other chess enthusiasts around your campus. Ask your RSO office what resources are available to help.
  • Establish completion within your club by establishing a club ladder.
  • Seek funding sources from your university, or hold club fund-raising drives.
  • Once you have established a basic club, make sure that your club remains viable in the future. You will want to train another club member to take the club over once you graduate. Having consistent leadership is a must if your club is to remain viable.
  • If you need resources to establish your club, please contact us. We will be glad to help you!
